Content / Abstract

This workshop will offer participants an introduction to didactic audiovisual translation and its main possibilities in language teaching. The session will be divided into two parts: First, we will present didactic audiovisual translation –subtitling, dubbing, voiceover, audiodescription, and subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing– focusing on its main benefits regarding language learning, translation skills, and meta-linguistic competence. Second, we will examine the potential of didactic AVT in several educational settings (Primary Education, Secondary Education, and Higher Education) by offering practical examples. The main objective of the workshop will be to provide participants with new insights into the educational possibilities of AVT.

Bionote

Alberto Fernández Costales is an Associate Professor at the University of Oviedo (Spain), where he teaches language teaching methodology. Among others, his research interests include Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), English-Medium Instruction (EMI), language attitudes, language teaching methodology, and didactic audiovisual translation. He has participated in several national and international research projects and serves as Associate Editor for journals in the field of translation studies and language teaching. He coordinates the PhD Programme in Education and Psychology of the University of Oviedo.

Content / Abstract

This workshop will be divided in two sections: theoretical introduction and hands-on practical work. In the introduction, the speaker will explain the main types of didactic subtitling, differentiating among intralingual, interlingual and creative subtitling. Then, she will concentrate on justifying communicative skills enhancement through didactic subtitling, especially in terms of audiovisual reception and production, and mediation skills. Didactic SDH will be dealt with separately to specify the main differences of this task when compared to didactic subtitling. Next, sample guidelines for students to succeed in the pedagogical application of both didactic subtitling and didactic SDH will be offered, as well as sample assessment rubrics for both tasks. In the second part of the workshop, a series of lesson plans samples will be presented to provide successful examples of didactic subtitling and didactic SDH practice and the participants will take up two hands-on roles: as students taking part of the lesson plans first and as designers of their own didactic subtitling tasks next.

Bionote

Noa Talaván obtained her PhD in 2009 with a thesis on the didactic applications of audiovisual translation to foreign language education. Since then, this has been her main research interest, a field where she has contributed with almost 30 peer-reviewed publications, including articles in specialised journals, book chapters, and monographs as well as co-editing a specialized issue. She is an Associate Professor of English Studies and Translation in the Foreign Languages Department of the Universidad Nacional de Education a Distancia (UNED), Spain, and has coordinated 14 teaching innovation projects since 2008 in the area of the didactic applications of audiovisual translation to foreign language education. Currently (since 2016), she is the coordinator of the teaching innovation research group ARENA (accessibility, audiovisual translation and language learning), and of the international research group TRADIT (didactic audiovisual translation), both based at the UNED.

Content / Abstract

This workshop will be divided in two sections: theoretical introduction and hands-on practical work. First, the workshop will present participants the basics of didactic revoicing with a particular focus on dubbing, voice-over, audio description and free commentary. It will describe the potential of each revoicing mode to enhance individual and combined language skills. Then, it will provide participants with sample guidelines and sample assessment rubrics for using the revoicing tasks in language classroom. In the second part of the workshop, participants will be able to try lesson plan samples of different revoicing modes and the participants will have two roles: as students taking part of the lesson plans first and as designers of their own didactic revoicing tasks next (using their own laptop).

Bionote

Jennifer Lertola, Ph.D. (NUI Galway), is English Junior Assistant Professor at Università del Piemonte Orientale, Italy. Her main research interests include audiovisual translation, foreign language teaching, e-learning and distance learning. She is the author of the book “Audiovisual Translation in the Foreign Language Classroom: Applications in the Teaching of English and Other Foreign Languages” published by Research-publishing.net in 2019, and of various papers on audiovisual translation in language learning. Furthermore, she has participated in several international research projects, including ClipFlair (Foreign Language Learning through Interactive Revoicing and Captioning of Clips) funded by the European Lifelong Learning Programme. She is part of the ARENA (Accessibility, Audiovisual Translation and Language Learning) teaching innovation group and is a member of the TRADIT (Didactic Audiovisual Translation) research group at the UNED, Spain.
