WORKSHOP: THE SPANISH AMBIVALENCE IN THE AGE OF EMPIRE

Spain and the international order in the 19th century Workshop internacional8–10 April 2026Sala de Juntas, Biblioteca Central, UNED – Madrid Complete Programme Because of the dissolution of the Catholic Monarchy, Spain transformed unpeacefully into an “imperial nation” that found an ambivalent role in the international order during the age of imperialism. On one side, Spain and the Spanish colonies. were object of the military interventions and the commercial and economic influence of several foreign powers. Conversely, as an empire of its own, intervened in other sovereign countries, waged wars overseas, sought to create its own sphere of influence, and took part in the European imperialist enterprise worldwide. This workshop will bring together a number of experts in the nineteenth century to discuss the international history of the Spanish Empire. Fenómenos como el racismo estructural, las persistentes brechas socioeconómicas, la desposesión de tierras, las políticas de fronteras o la crisis climática se interpretan hoy como consecuencias históricas de los sistemas de dominación imperial que acompañaron la expansión capitalista contemporánea. Los profesores Celeste Muñoz (UNED) y Miguel Cardina (CES, Universidad de Coimbra) convirtieron esta sesión en un espacio de diálogo crítico centrado en los casos de España y Portugal. Seminario Cambios III: Monarchies and Monarchisms in the Atlantic World, 1770 to the Present

https://youtu.be/Vk7oHrAWJcQ The seminar Monarchies and Monarchisms in the Atlantic World, 1770 to the Present offered a forum for debate on the historical evolution of monarchies and, centrally, on monarchism as a transnational political ideology in the Atlantic world from the age of revolutions to the present. Through the presentation and discussion of two recently published volumes—Making of Modern Atlantic Monarchies (Bloomsbury) and Transatlantic Monarchisms in the Americas and Europe (1812-1868) (Springer)—the seminar analysed the capacity of monarchies to adapt in contexts of imperial collapse, constitutional experimentation, and the formation of new political orders. The seminar brought together Professor Natalia Sobrevilla (Instituto Riva-Agüero), Professor Wim Klooster (Clarke University), Professor Adam Smith (Rothermere Institute, University of Oxford), and Professor Andrés Vicent (Université de Genève), whose contributions will offer comparative and long-term perspectives.
