«T. S. Eliot’s Drama: Significance and Spanish Reception»
T. S. Eliot’s poetry has been widely researched, translated and edited in Spain. To a lesser extent, the same is true of his influential criticism, but not of his drama.Eliot’s plays have received scarce critical attention, both internationally and in Spain – Murder in the Cathedral being an exception.
Murder in the Cathedral has been produced on several occasions in Spain, often in religious or medieval settings. Eliot’s “contemporary” plays (The Family Reunion, The Cocktail Party, The Confidential Clerk and The Elder Statesman) have never or seldom been performed – mostly in Madrid or Barcelona during the 50s.
Regarding translations of Eliot’s plays, Murder in the Cathedral is again exceptional: it has been translated into several of the official languages of Spain, and as recently as 2016. Surprisingly, subsequent plays have not had new translations into Spanish since the 70s. Spanish translations from the 1950s, produced specifically for the stage, are unpublished and forgotten.
The academic project of researching Eliot’s drama from a Spanish perspective pursues three main objectives: (i) studying Eliot’s original dramatic texts in depth, (ii) analysing their reception and performance in a Spanish context and (iii) producing updated, research-based translations into Spanish.

«The Translation into Spanish of T. S. Eliot’s Verse Drama: Precedents and Present Proposals»
One of the key objectives of the research project called T. S. Eliot’s Drama from Spain: Translation, Critical Study, Performance (TEATREL-SP) is to offer new translations into Spanish of Eliot’s plays. Before dealing with the task itself, however, two critical aspects have been considered: a) Eliot’s creation of the concept of “verse drama” in his 1951 essay “Poetry and Drama”, compared with similar attempts on the Spanish twentieth-century stage; and b) an analysis of the solutions adopted by previous Spanish and Spanish American translators, especially regarding the transposition of the innovations that Eliot introduces. With these two points in mind, we propose a method for translating the poetry of Eliot’s plays based on the rhythmic and accentual resources of Spanish at the service of meaning, following Eliot’s own praxis. Taking examples mainly from The Family Reunion, the play that acts as a breakthrough in Eliot’s theatrical experiment, this lecture reviews the whole process of the project, from the initial stages described, until its outcome in translations already available for publication.

“What is the TRADILEX Project? Aims and Procedures”
The TRADILEX Project stands for Audiovisual Translation as a Didactic Resource in Foreign Language Education. The main goal of TRADILEX is to determine the degree of improvement in the foreign language learning (FLL) process after including the pedagogical use of audiovisual translation (AVT) as a didactic tool. To this end, a methodological proposal is being articulated including complete didactic sequences made up of lesson plans which make use of diverse AVT modes (such as subtitling, dub bing or audiodescription) in order to enhance communicative competence and mediation skills in an integrated and differentiated manner. This methodology will be piloted with B1-B2-level English as a foreign language (EFL) adult students in non-formal educational contexts, especially in language centers of the universities involved. Based on the results obtained, the members of the project will write a manual of good practices on the use of didactic AVT and they will also design an online platform where the tasks and activities produced by TRADILEX may be available for any user (either teacher or student) interested in benefiting from these types of teaching resources.
The main objective of the seminar is to present the project by expanding on the topics commented above.

“TRADILEX. Educational application of Audiovisual Translation: Results from experience”
This seminar will be open to researchers, lecturers, and students willing to learn about the didactic possibilities of Audiovisual Translation (AVT). The session will report on the prospective results of the TRADILEX project regardig:
Research: We will discuss lines of enquiry that may follow the current project, namely the didactic application of several AVT modalities –subtitling, dubbing, voiceover, audiodescription, and subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing– and the main gains regarding language learning, translation skills, meta-linguistic competence, or accessibility issues.
Classroom practice: We will examine the potentiality of didactic AVT in several educational settings (Primary Education, Secondary Education, and Higher Education) by offering practical examples of projects and initiatives developed within the framework of TRADILEX.
The main objective of the seminar will be to provide participants with new insights into the educational possibilities of AVT.

Proyecto: Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación para la e-Administración: hacia la mejora de la comunicación entre Administración y ciudadanía a través del lenguaje claro (TIC-eADMIN)

“El proyecto TIC-eADMIN: la tecnología como recurso para favorecer la comunicación entre Administración y ciudadanía a través del lenguaje claro”
En este seminario se explicarán los objetivos, la metodología y los avances relativos al proyecto de investigación TIC-eADMIN. El principal objetivo del proyecto es desarrollar, en el contexto de la e-Administración, una herramienta TIC en línea de ayuda a la redacción de textos administrativos en español por parte de empleados públicos, para contribuir a que los textos que reciba la ciudadanía estén redactados en lenguaje claro. Para ello se han fijado tres objetivos específicos. El primero es investigar sobre las posibilidades que el Procesamiento del Lenguaje Natural ofrece para detectar de manera automática en textos administrativos fenómenos lingüísticos que interfieran en la redacción en lenguaje claro. El segundo objetivo es analizar y sistematizar los rasgos lingüísticos prototípicos de algunos géneros textuales específicos del ámbito de la Administración. Finalmente, el tercer objetivo es diseñar e implementar una herramienta TIC para la mejora de la comunicación escrita entre la Administración y la ciudadanía en el contexto de la e-Administración, que se integrará en la infraestructura tecnológica del sistema arText.

“ArText, un proyecto integral de ingeniería lingüística”
Con base en el Instituto Cervantes, con una perspectiva más de la lengua, la ingeniería lingüística se concreta en sistemas informáticos que proporcionan servicios que satisfacen las necesidades de los usuarios finales. Para ello, se basan en el aprovechamiento y desarrollo de recursos y de tecnologías del lenguaje. Si bien la interacción de estas dos nos permite pensar en distintos desarrollos, otro aspecto clave para su concreción consiste en la simbiosis continua con las tecnologías informáticas, desde el modelado en los diferentes niveles de la lengua y la explotación óptima de los recursos, hasta la creación y distribución de las herramientas y aplicaciones. Esta ponencia expone de manera general la concepción de la ingeniería lingüística y de manera particular se ilustra con el proyecto arText, que constituye un ejemplo claro del aprovechamiento integral de las tecnologías del lenguaje como de la informática para facilitar la comunicación en los diversos sectores de la sociedad.

“Natural Language processing to manage harmful content online”
Abusive comments, toxic behaviour, harassment, misinformation and fake news—it seems like a bleak landscape online. Most of these problems involve using language to hurt others, whether individuals or groups. Some of them can be solved using linguistic knowledge and Natural Language Processing (NLP). If we can describe and identify the language of ‘nice’ vs. ‘nasty’ comments, then we can promote the former and filter out the latter. If we can reliably identify misinformation and fake news stories, then we can stop them before they spread online. In this talk, I first describe the role of discourse information in NLP and will outline existing tools and techniques in English and Spanish. Then I will describe two projects in my lab that incorporate discourse: comment moderation and fake news detection. I conclude with another showcase for discourse in NLP, the arText project at UNED.
