Climate change is a central challenge for the international community and also for the European Union. As demonstrated by the approach of this book, the so-called European Climate Law, by its very transversal nature, goes beyond strictly legal aspects and projects them towards multiple Union policies. The proposed solutions not only benefit the community club but, through international negotiations, spread, turning the European Union into a model of climate governance for other international actors. This work analyzes the enormous challenge posed by the ecological transition in all its dimensions and the effects it will have on future generations.

This book presents innovative insights into the intersections between science, technology, and society, and particularly their regulation by the law. Departing from the idea that law and science have similar methods and objectives, the book deals with problems, and solutions, that source from these interactions: concerns on how to integrate scientific evidence into trials, how to best regulate new technologies, or whether technological innovations could improve democratic legitimacy, create new regulatory tools or even new spaces of regulation, and what is the impact on the society. Climate migration has emerged as one of the most complex and pressing challenges of the twenty-first century, calling established legal categories into question and revealing new forms of vulnerability that directly engage the protection of human rights in the context of climate change.
Far from being a uniform phenomenon, climate migration reflects a deeply multidimensional reality shaped by the interplay of environmental, economic, social, and political factors, as well as structural dynamics of inequality. This volume provides a comprehensive and rigorous overview of the current state of the debate, addressing key issues such as the conceptualization of climate migration, its legal implications, existing normative gaps, and potential avenues for international protection.
The book is complemented by a series of case studies that examine, from a comparative perspective, the various manifestations of the phenomenon in contexts such as Africa, Latin America, and small island developing States. Particular attention is paid to the most vulnerable groups and to the tensions between mobility, rootedness, and adaptation.
Drawing on an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the social sciences, particularly sociology and anthropology, with legal studies, international relations, and international development cooperation, this work examines climate migration not only as a consequence of climate change but also as a potential adaptation strategy in response to its impacts.
