href=\"https:\/\/openeu.eu\/link?external_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.eventbrite.co.uk%2Fe%2Feadtu-eu-summit-2025-tickets-1286014376619\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>13th European Distance Education Summit (EADTU-EU 2025)<\/u>(External link)<\/a>&nbsp;held today in Brussels.&nbsp;Under the theme \u201cInteroperability in action: connecting European higher education\u201d, the summit gathered European leaders and experts to explore how digital collaboration and harmonization can shape a more connected, scalable, and inclusive European Higher Education Area (EHEA).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Organised by the<strong>&nbsp;European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU)<\/strong>, OpenEU associated partner, the summit featured the participation of key representatives from OpenEU, the alliance of Europe\u2019s leading open and distance universities. The event was opened by&nbsp;<strong>Theo Bastiaens<\/strong>,&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openeu.eu\/link?external_url=https%3A%2F%2Feadtu.eu%2Findex.php%2Fabout%2Fpresidency\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>President of EADTU<\/u>(External link)<\/a>, Rector of the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openeu.eu\/link?external_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ou.nl%2Fen%2Fhome\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Open Universiteit<\/u>(External link)<\/a>&nbsp;(Netherlands), and member of OpenEU, who urged university alliances to move from theory to full interoperability across the European Higher Education Area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pastora Mart\u00ednez Samper<\/strong>, UOC\u2019s Commissioner for International Action and coordinator of OpenEU, emphasized that the alliance is not just a consortium but a driver of transformation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>We launched OpenEU because we were already working together to push things forward. Now, we want to transform together to be at the forefront of Higher Education in Europe.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>OpenEU in the spotlight: interoperability with purpose<\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Central to the discussions was the alliance\u2019s commitment to developing interoperable digital systems designed to support people, foster inclusion, and enable lifelong learning\u2014going beyond technology alone<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u00c0ngels Fit\u00f3<\/strong>, Rector of the UOC, President of OpenEU, and Vice President of EADTU, underscored the role of open universities in reaching underserved groups:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cToday, we\u2019ve talked about skills, systems, accessibility, and databases\u2014but at the heart of everything we\u2019ve discussed are people. Interoperability isn\u2019t just technical; it\u2019s a tool to democratize knowledge and expand opportunity.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>The use case of \u201copenEU Professional GPS\u201d Tool: connecting learning with labour markets<\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Carme Pag\u00e8s,<\/strong>&nbsp;Director of UOC\u2019s Labour Market Research and Analysis Unit, presented&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openeu.eu\/link?external_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DjnAW5OvBkkM%26embeds_referring_euri%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.uoc.edu%252F%26embeds_referring_origin%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.uoc.edu%26source_ve_path%3DMjg2NjY\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Professional GPS<\/u>(External link)<\/a>, a digital tool that links learners\u2019 profiles with labour market needs using a cross-European skills framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>There\u2019s a disconnect between the language universities speak and the language of the labor market. The Professional GPS aims to be the translator between the two.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tool already has more than 3,000 users at UOC and now is being integrated into OpenEU\u2019s joint portfolio strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With examples like GPS, the summit underlined the leadership of European Universities alliances such as OpenEU, Una Europa, and EuroTech in testing and scaling interoperable solutions \u2014 from joint virtual campuses to shared course catalogues and European learner IDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his closing remarks,&nbsp;<strong>Theo Bastiaens<\/strong>&nbsp;summarised the main takeaways of the event and called for bold next steps.
