Organization Description

The Icelandic Red Cross is a leading organization in humanitarian aid in Iceland and builds all projects on voluntary service. The Icelandic community relies and trusts the Red Cross during crises and disasters. The Red Cross mobilizes people to make a positive change in their environment.


The Icelandic Red Cross was founded on December 10th in 1924. Ever since, the organization has been a leading force in healthcare, social care and humanitarian aid in Iceland. The Icelandic Red Cross is also an auxiliary to the Icelandic government, f.ex. in the field of disaster and emergency services and refugee services.  

 

Volunteer Position Title: Social support for refugees and asylum seekers: work with people with or seeking international protection. The aim of social support for applicants for international protection is to serve the clients and provide them with social activities, engagement, and connection to the local community, but equally to raise public awareness and encourage participation.

Volunteer Position Description

This volunteering role works with supporting refugees and individuals with international protection in Iceland by fostering social connections.

  • Participate in social activities for people with or seeking international protection in Iceland 

  • Organise events and projects with empowerment and active participation as guiding principles.

  • Encourage integration and reduce social isolation through participation in social activities  

The Red Cross provides training, onboarding and support for this opportunity. Social activities are held on weekdays, usually in the afternoon, with 5-7 happenings every week. Volunteers in the OpenEU Volunteering Programme are expected to participate in 4-5 events on a weekly basis.

Lunch can be provided for volunteers doing a full time placement. Flights to and accommodations in Iceland are not covered and are the responsibility of the student.

Language Requirements

  • English, Arabic, Ukrainian, Spanish, Kurdish, Farsi (depending on project and participant needs)

Timeframe

  • 2 weeks- 1 month, August – December or January – May

 

Insurance
Volunteers must take care of their own travel and health insurance.

Flights and accommodations are not covered and are the responsibility of the student.
