Linguistic deniability is the capacity of speakers to craft their speech in a way that allows them to deny responsibility for part of it. Deniable speech is characteristically exploited whenever a certain message would have a high reputational, legal, or political cost to a speaker [Pinker et al 2008; Lee & Pinker 2010]. Researchers have set out to diagnose the different linguistic and conversational mechanisms by which speakers can produce deniable content, such as insinuation [Camp 2018, 2022; Fricker 2012] implicature [Bonalumi 2024], ambiguity [Delgado & Picazo 2026], dogwhisting [Torices 2021; Saul 2024], retweeting [Marsili 2021] or subtweeting [Neufeld & Woodard 2025]. My current project (Deniability in Media, BBVA Leonardo, 2026-7) aims to study the use of linguistically deniable speech in media, with the intent to communicate biases without falsehood. Unsurprisingly, deniable speech is prevalent in media. Salient examples include mentioning the nationality or ethnicity of a purported criminal, e.g.: ‘Iraqi Refugee Is Convicted in Germany of Raping and Murdering Teenage Girl’ (New York Times, 2019), but also certain choices of language (“child” vs “minor”). In this talk, I will introduce the theoretical underpinnings of the project, as well as the empirical studies that I aim to carry out.

Bio
Andrés Soria Ruiz is tenure track researcher (Ramón y Cajal) at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Barcelona, where he has worked since September 2022, and a Senior member of the research group LOGOS, and a Faculty member of BIAP.
